Euro 2012: Accommodation in Donetsk Has a Speculative Character
It isn’t a secret that the situation with the European Football Championship 2012 preparation in Donetsk is poorly highlighted in the Internet. Each day I get requests from many football fans from England, France and other world countries to help them with accommodation in Donetsk. I need to emphasize that, today, majority of the Donetsk landlords do not hasten to book their apartments and hold them to rent out closer to the beginning of the championship.
The matter is that landlords are more concerned about renting out their apartments for coming New Year and Christmas Eve. Then, I’m sure they’ll be worry about renting out their apartments for other Ukrainian holidays such as Valentine Day, Defenders’ Day, Women’s Day, Easter, and etc. Those who are ready to rent their apartments now just raised the prices in 10 times! As told one French tour operator “let’s wait when ‘speculative bubble’ will burst”. However, I’m afraid, if football fans start to rent apartments for such crazy prices now, the landlords will not reduce their prices. Actually, they’ve already started to retold each other stories that someone rented out someone’s apartment for 400 EUR per night for 10 days, another man was offered to renovate his apartment for 6 000 EUR that tenant paid in advance and, in addition, that tenant paid 11000 EUR more for renting apartment during Euro 2012.
Apartment is 10 minute walks to the Donbass Arena (3 sleeping places). Landlord wants 280 EUR per night.
As for today, studio apartments located in the center of Donetsk city not far from Donbass Arena Stadium start from 250-300 EUR per night. Besides, landlords don’t want to rent out their apartments for a short period of time. They want to rent out apartments at least for one week. It is understandable as they don’t want to lose money between football matches. In fact, whether the football fans like it or not, Euro 2012 is a gold mine for many landlords in Donetsk.

Monitoring the situation regarding accommodation in Donetsk, I can say that starting from September, many landlords who used to rent out their apartment for long-time period started to add phrase “apartment can be rented till June”. Besides, after communicating with local residents, it became clear to me that many of them are agree to move out from their apartments and to rent them out during the European Football Championship 2012. So closer to June 2012, it is expected that many short-term rentals will have competition in the form of apartments that are usually rented for a long period of time and other apartments. Perhaps, you’ll have to rent apartment a little far from the center of Donetsk and without modern renovation, but don’t worry that apartment will be clean and cozy.
Hope you’ll enjoy your stay in Donetsk!
