Level of Literacy in Ukraine Is Practically 100%

Many people think that Ukraine belongs to the third word countries with a low level of things in all spheres of life. However, in spite of the fact that we are living in the XXI century, no country could boast of 100% literacy of its nation. Besides, there are some citizens more educated than others even in the developed countries. Ukraine is one of those countries.

According to the United Nations Development Programme Report 2009, 99.7% of adults can read and write in Ukraine. Slovenia, Belarus, and Lithuania have the same level of literacy among European countries. As to Great Britain, France, and Germany, the level of literacy is just under 99% there. The situation is worse in Spain – 97.9% and in Rumania – 97.6%.

Indeed, Ukraine still has a high level of literacy among adults and a lot of people have higher education (some even two). Our country received a good educational base from the former USSR. It is well-known that specialists from former USSR were highly valuable all over the world. The same can be said of Ukrainian specialists as well. Yes, it is true that education in our country has a downside too. Another truth is that it is possible to buy any grade in the institute and even a diploma. However, corruption in the Ukrainian institutes is another story as now we are talking about real experts who are recognized worldwide.

There are many talented young scientists in Ukraine. I will not say the situation in education is perfect. However, several educational areas including such fields as physics, mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, chemistry, and biology are at a very high level for sure. Many of our universities cooperate with Western partners and receive many requests to recommend Ukrainian graduates and young scientists for postgraduate study or to work on a post-doctoral position of university.

Our students, if they wish, can get a very good education, but they need to work hard and not just go to nightclubs and discos. Many of our students, thanks to obtained knowledge in Ukraine, continue to study and work in Europe and America. Moreover, they are competing at the highest level. Basic training in the Ukrainian universities is great. However, our government needs to improve the practical training and the material base of our universities should be upgraded as well.
